If you’re an active Snapchat and Instagram user then you must have heard of the name, Bobrisky, or at least seen a couple of his pictures. He is the male Barbie of Snapchat in the Nigerian sphere and also the most popular Nigerian on the social app.

Arguably the most controversial male celebrity in Nigeria, Bobrisky has managed to divide the affections of Nigerian’s towards his personality. He is sometimes seen as a joke and other times, as a trouble maker to be avoided. Hardly a month goes by without Bobrisky’s name coming up in a social media fight against other celebrities.

Bobrisky Biography

Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju (born 1992) popularly known as Bobrisky is a highly controversial Nigerian internet personality, entrepreneur, cross-dresser, and philanthropist who is known as a prominent transgender woman in Nigeria, a country with no LGBT rights. He is from Ogun State, though born Ebute Meta, Lagos and attended Kings’ College in Lagos State, one of the most prestigious schools in the country. He studied accounting and graduated from the University of Lagos, (UNILAG).

In May 2019, Bobrisky confirmed that his pronouns are “she” and “her” after receiving several misgendered comments on her Instagram profile.

Background

Bobrisky has a very rich Muslim background, his parents are devoted Muslims who never jokes with their praying hours (5 times a day). Unlike his parents, Bobrisky chose to be a Christian, citing stress as his reason for neglecting his parent’s religion.

It might have started as an attention-seeking ploy, Bobrisky became recognized by being highly controversial on social media for the ultra-conservative Nigerian standards. He was able to gather traffic to his Snapchat account when he claimed he had a lover who is assumed to be of masculine gender despite the law in Nigeria stating that same-sex relationship is an offense punishable by serving 14 years in a penitentiary.

Bobrisky, by virtue of just existing, introduced into the Nigerian society a set of ethics and morals which are not aligned with the assumed social norm of Nigeria. He has been received with mixed feelings as he has a fair number of fans and critics alike. On a notable occasion, a Nigerian presidential aide for reasons best known to her walked out on sight of Bobrisky at the residence.

Arrest

Bobrisky was first arrested in 2013 at a bar in Surulere for claiming to be a female hooker. Then at 19, he was uncovered by a man who took interest in him upon entering the bar. While the man wanted to fiddle with ‘her’ breast, a sachet of pure water fell out instead, leading to an uproar. Bobrisky who was handed to the police claimed he dressed that way to deceive men, citing his love for academic pursuit led him to act that way as he needed money to purchase JAMB form. I went into it in order to raise money for my education. After my secondary school education, my father told me he could not afford money for me to buy JAMB form.

Again there was nobody to help me because I am a man. I realized that men do not help their fellow men but women. Then, I decided to start dressing like a lady to deceive men and get money from them but I do not sleep with them. Whenever it gets to that stage, I stylishly excuse myself”

Asked how he usually collected money from men, he revealed that he would dial any number and if the owner happened to be a man, he would invite him over, posing as a club girl.

His preys according to him, sometimes fell into his trap while others disregarded him.

Continuing, Idris said,

So far, I have realised N20,000, out of which I used to buy part time form in University of Lagos and a JAMB form”

Asked if his parents are aware of what he was into, he shook his head, explaining that he never paraded himself like a lady around his vicinity in Isolo.

On how he usually got himself dressed, he explained,

First, I would get a female dress and place two sachets of water on my breast, to make me look like a female and then, I will wear female shoes. I cat-walk like women because I always watch them walk and have been practicing the way they walk until I started this year. I had contemplated quitting at the end of next month,”, he said.

How Bobrisky Became Popular

It was acknowledged that Bobrisky in 2016 used the social media platform to attract the public to himself by uploading a very controversial statement on his social media accounts (Snapchat and Twitter). He publicly opened the secret behind his marital status and life by showing the image of the man whom he called his boyfriend.

Prior to his complexion transformation, the Snapchat celebrity’s skin colour was just as dark as most Nigerians until he suddenly turned snow-white – kudos to his bleaching cream expertise. According to him, it was a business strategy. This move immediately thrust him into the limelight via social media and he garnered both haters and admirers at the same time.

He does not care about the rumours of his sexuality or waste time firing back at critics and once posted on his Facebook page that as far as he is counting his millions and also helping people, paying his tithes to the Lord, he is totally fine.

Of course, everyone believes he is gay as he continues to mention his mysterious boyfriend who has been his sponsor. Bobrisky trended on Snapchat for months before moving to Instagram where he has been to date.

Celebrities such as Denrele and Charlie Boy had held the forth a while before Bobrisky’s emergence, making him the best in the category. So controversial is Bobrisky that he trumps that of all others combined, and conveniently at that. He definitely took cross-dressing to another level in Nigeria as he goes about with padded bars and completely dons female attire.

Not just controversial being a cross-dresser, Bobrisky’s most notable fall out is with none other than Tunde Ednut whom Bobrisky claimed he turned down his advances being the reason for their fight.

In November 2019, Bobrisky announced that he was travelling to Dubai for surgery to enhance his physique. A few days later, he shared a bloodied video suggesting he had rounded off his procedure. It remains unknown which area of his body he had the procedure done.

Bobrisky’s best friend Tonto Dikeh. The duo has been friends for over a year and Bobrisky unashamedly has stood up for her ever-controversial friend who makes the news for every wrong reason there is. Strangely, their relationship fell apart in 2021 which resulted in a messy Instagram fight that lasted a few days.
