Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu (born 2 July 1991), known professionally as Burna Boy, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. He rose to prominence in 2012 after releasing “Like to Party”, the lead single from his debut studio album L.I.F.E (2013). In 2017, Burna Boy signed with Bad Habit/Atlantic Records in the United States and Warner Music Group internationally. His third studio album Outside marked his major-label debut.

Damini Ogulu was born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. His father managed a welding company and his mother worked as a translator. His grandfather Benson Idonije once managed Fela Kuti. His mother Bose Ogulu would later become his manager. Ogulu grew up in southern Nigeria and began making his own beats using FruityLoops (FL Studio). He attended Corona Secondary School in Agbara and relocated to London to further his studies.

Burna Boy describes his music as Afro-fusion, a genre that blends Afrobeat, dancehall riddims, reggae, American rap, and R&B. August Brown of The Los Angeles Times said Burna Boy’s sound is “savvy and modern but undistracted by obvious crossover moves”.

Burna Boy’s fourth studio album African Giant was released on 26 July 2019. It has been supported by six singles: “Gbona”, “On the Low”, Killin Dem”, “Dangote”, “Anybody” and “Pull Up”. He began recording the album in 2018. He told Billboard magazine the album is his most personal yet. He first revealed plans to release the album in April 2019 and held a private listening session in Los Angeles.

Photos and videos from the listening session were shared on social media. African Giant was initially announced as a 16-track album. In order to promote the album, Burna Boy headlined the African Giant Returns tour, the second leg of his African Giant tour. Burna Boy recorded “My Money, My Baby”, a track that appeared on Queen & Slim’s soundtrack album. Described as an “Afrobeat-tinged track”, “My Money, My Baby” contains a sample of Fela Kuti’s 1972 song “Shakara”.

Burna Boy & Grammy

Burna Boy won the 2021 Grammy Away Global Music Award category for his Twice As Tall Album. It was his second consecutive nomination following that of African Giant which he lost to Angelique Kidjo the previous year. Burna Boy had assumed he would win the category but unsurprisingly lost to the Beninoise legend. Burna Boy would later admit that he was depressed after he lost the Grammy category to Angelique Kidjo in “Level Up” (the intro to Twice As Tall) where he claimed:

I remember when I couldn’t level up
‘Cause the Grammys had me feeling sick as f*ck
Throwing up and sh*t
Asking questions like, “Why it wasn’t us?
Almost had a n*gga feeling envious (serious)

Suspecting Burna would feel bad for not winning, Legendary Kidjo made a video, dedicating her Grammy win to Burna Boy.

Controversies

Burna Boy has always courted controversies. As a matter of fact, he made it to our list of controversial Nigerian personalities as he is always making headlines for trivial issues.

Despite being a bundle of talent, Burna Boy often feels insecure and never stops claiming to be the best. While this is not a problem, equal success, to Burna seems to come off as a threat. He once shaded Davido for claiming to be the “best of all time” alongside Wizkid. As if Wizkid’s friendship does not mean a thing, Burna also shaded Wizkid and claimed his Grammy Win was “gum body”; implying Wizkid won on the influence of the collaboration with Beyonce.

Relationship

Burna Boy has been in a relationship with British dancehall singer, Stefflon Don for a while now. The pair seem serious about becoming long life partners.
