Onika Tanya Maraj, better known as Nicki Minaj (born December 8, 1982) is a Trinidad and Tobago-born rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, actress, and model. She was born in Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, although from a very young age she grew up in the borough of Queens, in New York. Her parents, Robert and Carol Maraj, were gospel singers.

She grew up in the St. James district of Port of Spain with her grandmother until she was 5, before returning to her parents in New York. Between gospel and clarinet lessons, Nicki’s vocation grew and she decided to study singing and performance at Guardia High School, after getting the much-needed encouragement from her parents and friends. A climate of violence sets in under the thumb of a father accustomed to excesses. Nicki Minaj took refuge in music and in a world where she creates fantasy “doubles”.

After graduation, she tried unsuccessfully to succeed as an actress in the theater scene of New York, but it was in vain. She ended up working as a waitress and was fired on numerous occasions for her indiscipline.

Twenty-year-old, in 2002, she is spotted by Fendi on MySpace, who decides to sign her under her label Dirty Money. In return, young Nicki woman adopted the stage name “Nicki Maraj”, although she finally adapted it as Nicki Minaj. However, it was mostly her collaborations with popular artists like Lil Wayne, Christina Aguilera, Will.i.am. who pushed her to the limelight.

On July 5, 2007, Nicki Minaj published her first mixtape, titled “Playtime is Over,” which was followed a year later by another titled “Sucka Free.” In 2009 she published a third mixtape, “Beam Me Up Scotty”, with which she began to play on MTV. The single “I Crazy Crazy” found its way to the Billboard Hot Rap list. Following her rising popularity, she drew the attention of rapper Lil Wayne, who signed her to Young Money Entertainment label.

In November 2010, she released her first album, Pink Friday which was an instant success. From the week of its release, it ranked No. 2 sales in the United States and at the end of the year, the magazine Rolling Stone branded her the “New Queen of Hip Hop”.

In August 2011, she was named Best Female Hip Hop Artist at the BET Awards in Los Angeles. Throughout 2011, Nicki continued with collaborations with big names, from Britney Spears to Drake, through the young Willow Smith or the French DJ David Guetta on his clip Turn me on.

In early April 2012, her second album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, was born, produced by her friends RedOne, Dr Luke, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Drake and Kane Beatz. Since the end of September 2012, the curvaceous rapper has been part of the jury of the twelfth season of American Idol, alongside Keith Urban, Mariah Carey and Randy Jackson. Her disagreement with Mariah Carey during the auditions of the show went viral and trended all around the world.

The third instalment of Nicki, actually a reissue of Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, was released November 19, 2012.
