Meaning of zip code

The word zip code means “Zone Improvement Plan code”. It is a term used to refer to “postal code” in the United States. Across the world, most countries use the word “postal code” instead of “zip code”. Both zip codes and postal codes are used for the same purpose—mailing.

The term ZIP is an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan; it was chosen to suggest that the mail travels more efficiently and quickly (zipping along) when senders use the code in the postal address.

So just in case you see “zip code” some other time, it is the same “postal code” but the United States of America is one of the very few who use the word “zip code”. Nigeria and most countries of the world use “postal code”.

Another thing to add is that the United States Postal Service (USPS) has designated codes for other countries which are put to use when handling deliveries or postal services. These codes are somehow equivalent to the U.S. zip codes.
