Ahmed Musa Biography
Ahmed Musa, born on October 14, 1992, is a Nigerian professional footballer known for his roles as a forward and left winger. He currently plays for Turkish Süper Lig club Sivasspor and captains the Nigeria national team.
Musa made history as the first Nigerian to score multiple goals in a FIFA World Cup match, achieving this feat with a brace against Argentina during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He further solidified his legacy by becoming the first Nigerian to score in two FIFA World Cup tournaments, netting twice against Iceland in the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. With 108 appearances, he holds the record for Nigeria’s most capped player since November 2021. Musa was also part of the Al Nassr squad that clinched the Saudi Premier League and Saudi Super Cup titles in 2019.
Personal Life
In April 2017, Musa engaged in a dispute with his wife Jamila, prompting police intervention at his residence. Subsequently, the couple divorced due to irreconcilable differences. Musa tied the knot with Juliet Ejue in Abuja on May 23 of the same year.
Additionally, Musa expanded his business portfolio by acquiring a second petrol station in Nigeria in October 2017. Tragically, on January 24, 2019, Musa took to Twitter to confirm the passing of his mother, Sarah Musa, who had been battling illness.
International career
In April 2010, under Coach Lars Lagerbäck, Musa received his first call-up to join the Nigeria national football team camp ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. This came after he helped the Nigerian team secure victory in the 2010 WAFU Nations Cup, where he notably scored a goal against Benin. Musa’s crucial goal in a match against Burkina Faso during the same tournament propelled Nigeria into the finals. Unfortunately, he had to withdraw from the Super Eagles’ 30-man World Cup roster due to an ankle injury.
At the age of 17, Musa made his debut for the Nigeria senior team on August 5, 2010, in a qualification match for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations against Madagascar. He came on as a substitute for Mikel John Obi in a 2–0 win. Musa scored his maiden goal for the Super Eagles in a friendly against Kenya in March 2011.
In April 2011, despite being declared unavailable by his club VVV Venlo, Musa was included in the Nigeria national under-20 football team squad for the 2011 African Youth Championship qualifiers. After negotiations involving the Nigerian Federation, VVV Venlo, and Musa’s representatives, an agreement was reached for Musa to split his time between the Netherlands and South Africa to participate in the tournament. Following the opening game against defending champions Ghana, Musa was awarded the Most Valuable Player accolade and promptly returned to the Netherlands.
In August 2011, Musa represented Nigeria U20 in the FIFA U-20 World Cup held in Colombia, where he notched three goals in five matches. His impressive performance earned him a spot on FIFA’s shortlist of 10 candidates for the Adidas Golden Ball, awarded to the tournament’s most outstanding player.
